Bionic Commando Rearmed is a special kind of game. Definitely a by-gamers-for-gamers kind of game. I had a chance to play it a little bit over the weekend, and it really is freaking awesome. I have a fondness for the orginal, and was amazed to see how much of the NES "feel" translated into this modern reworking of the game. So much of the core experience remains intact. But now the bullets have real power, the enemies have heft, the swinging feels even cooler. In essence, it's like the Bionic Commando you wish it was back when you were playing it on the NES. And you have to give props to the developers for the insane attention to detail, like the Mega Man construction hats and the funny (yes, funny) enemy dialogue when you hack their network.
It therefore warms the soul when you read here (thanks, Kotaku) that sales of Bionic Commando Rearmed blew Capcom's expectations out of the water. Seven days and 130,000 units!! Much deserved. Read an interview with one of the developers on GameSetWatch to see how careful and creative thinking can actually pay off. A happy good time story for skeptics like me.
Thanks, Bionic Commando Rearmed! Bock, bock!
